Day 1 > Arrival Kigali.
On arrival to Kigali airport, you will be met and welcomed by an expert driver guide. He will brief you about your safari holiday and then transfer you to your Kigali hotel. Thereafter, if arriving on a flight before 2pm, you will have a guided Kigali city tour where you will have a chance to visit Kigali’s most famous historical sites including a genocide memorial site, a church in Nyamata. You will also visit a local market to buy some traditional art and craft items, made and oven by local Rwandans. Your safari dollars make a difference to the livelihoods of the local people.
Day 2 > Kigali – Akagera National Park
Have an early breakfast and transfer to Akagera National Park in Eastern Rwanda. It is a very comfortable 2 hours drive from Kigali to Akagera through a very scenic part of Rwanda. On the way you will drive past local Rwandans going about their daily lives. You will arrive and check in at Akagera Game Lodge for refreshments and lunch before heading out for an afternoon game drive in Akagera National Park.
Day 3 >Akagera National Park
Wake up very early and return to the park for game drives in search of lions, buffalos, giraffes and elephants. The birdlife in Akagera is quite simply amazing. Avid birders will have a field day on safari to Akagera. You will return to the lodge for lunch and then in the afternoon, you will explore a different section of the park when you take a boat cruise on Lake Ihema. As you sail on the lake you will see plenty of hippos and crocodiles as well as more birds. Later in the evening you return to Akagera Game Lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 4 > Akagera National Park – Kigali
Have an early morning game drive in the park in search of more lions, giraffes, zebras and buffalos before driving back to Kigali. You will spend the afternoon at leisure either at the hotel or t explore Kigali city and have dinner at one of the popular restaurants in Kigali.
Day 5 > Kigali – Nyungwe Forest National Park
Today we transfer to the southern part of the land of a thousand hills. Nyungwe Forest is our next safari holiday destination for the next few days. Enroute to Nyungwe, we shall have a scheduled stop over in Nyanza to visit the royal palace museum and in Butare to visit the Rwanda National Museum. We shall have lunch in Butare before continuing to Nyungwe Forest, home to 13 primate species, a number of forest and waterfall trails as well as the canopy walk suspended over Nyungwe Forest.
Day 6 > Nyungwe Forest National Park
A very early rise and head to the park headquarters for pre-chimpanzee tracking briefings. We shall head to the forest in search of the sometimes elusive chimps especially when it rains. When we find the chimpanzees, we shall watch them play, interact, feed and jump from tree to tree. Chimps are amazing animals and man’s closest relatives. We shall later return to the lodge for lunch, before heading out for the canopy walk in the afternoon.
Day 7 > Nyungwe Forest National Park – Lake Kivu Kibuye.
Today it is time to depart from the beautiful Nyungwe. We drive along a very scenic route with great views of rolling hills, tea plantations and lake Kivu. We arrive in Kibuye in time for lunch at the gorgeous boutique Cormoran Lodge on the shores of Lake Kivu. In the evening you either take a boat trip on the lake or simply relax on the shores of Lake Kivu.
Day 8 > Kibuye – Gisenyi.
After breakfast, you have the opportunity of either travelling to Gisenyi by boat or overland from Kibuye. On arrival you will have the opportunity of having a walk to the border town of Goma, visit hot springs in Gisenyi or explore one of the small islands on the lake. You later return to your hotel/resort for dinner and overnight.
Day 9> Lake Kivu Gisenyi- Volcanoes National Park.
Morning at leisure on the beaches of Lake Kivu. After lunch, we depart for Virunga Volcanoes National Park. Arrival and check in at one of the beautiful lodges on the edges of Volcanoes National Park. In the evening we shall visit Ibyi’wacu cultural village now renamed gorillas guardian village for a taste of the local Rwanda way of life and living.
Day 10 > Gorilla tracking Volcanoes National Park.
Very early breakfast before you are transferred to Virunga Volcanoes National Park headquarters. You will be briefed about the do’s and don’ts of gorilla tracking. You will be divided into groups of 8 and be transferred to the gorilla tracking trailheads. You will ascend into the mountains guided by expert ranger guides. On finding the gorillas, you will be 1 hour with them. You will have a chance to photograph them, take selfies with the gorillas, short videos and watch them play, feed, interact and going about their daily lives. You will later descend down the mountains where you will find your driver guide waiting to drive you back to the lodge.
Evening walk to the twin lakes of Bulera and Ruhondo before retiring to your lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 11 > Volcanoes National Park – Kigali
After breakfast, we shall embark on the 2.5hours drive back to Kigali. Arrival to Kigali and transfer to the airport for your connecting flight to your next destination or back home.
This safari may be combined with a beach holiday in Zanzibar or a safari extension to Masai Mara In Kenya or Serengeti in Tanzania
