Uganda offers various options and places for visiting with the chimpanzees. One is able to track the chimps in either Kibale Forest or Budongo Forest in Murchison Falls National Park. You may also participate in the chimpanzee habituation experience in Kibale Forest. However, closer to Kampala and Entebbe, one is able to have a much more rewarding upclose and personal experience with the chimpanzees at Ngamba Island in Lake Victoria. Visit Ngamba Island and have a flexible, personalized and authentic chimpanzee safari tour with a small group guided tour of the amazing chimps. Have close encounters with the chimpanzees, when you participate in chimpanzee feeding, chimp nest preparation and take part in the challenge of the chimpanzee critical thinking exercise.
A safari visit to Ngamba Island is much more than chimps, you will visit the local fishing villages, have a sunset cruise on Lake Victoria, have a community cultural experience, a boat cruise and participate in local fishing.
DAY 1: Travel to Ngamba Island (45 minute boat ride)
Arrival at Entebbe Airport where you will be met by our representative. Alternatively, you will be collected from your Entebbe or Kampala hotel if already in Uganda. You will then be transferred to the Waterfront Club jetty on the shores of Lake Victoria in Entebbe where you will board a boat to Ngamba Island. It is 23 kms and a comfortable 45 minutes boat ride from Entebbe to Ngamba Island if you travel by speed boat. The traditional motorized canoe takes about 1.5hours and if you take a flight from Kajjansi then it would be a short 20 minutes flight. If you transfer by boat, on our way to the Island, you will close the equator on Lake Victoria when the boat cruise captain will stop for you to take photos and have a quick swim if you prefer.
By prior arrangement and reservation, it is possible to reserve chartered boats for large groups and group events as well as helicopters. Please contact our reservations team and we will gladly assist you in reserving your transportation to the island. We strongly suggest and recommend that you pre-pay for your Ngamba Chimpanzee sanctuary entrance tickets before arrival to the Island.
On arrival at Ngamba island, you will be welcomed by a sanctuary guide who will assist you check into your luxury tented accommodation at the island. The tents are overlooking Lake Victoria with great views, en-suite bathrooms and eco solar lighting.
You will later watch the chimpanzees feeding at very close range on a raised platform from where you will observe the chimps play, eat, rest and interact.
In the afternoon and after lunch, you will go bird watching and later participate watch the chimps return for the night, feed and prepare their nests. It is a very rewarding chimp observation experience.
As the day winds to an end, you are invited to join a sunset cruise to enjoy fantastic views of Lake Victoria at sunset as well as witness local fishermen casting their fishing nets, as you sip a cold Ugandan beer or cold drink. You will return to the camp for dinner and be entertained by a local dance group that will take you through Ugandan fork lore, music, dance, drama and story-telling. What a day, totally well worth it!
Day 2: Challenge Chimp critical thinking or Local fishing and departure
An early breakfast and then either take part in the chimpanzee environment enrichment program, which will involve you challenging the chimp’s critical thinking abilities to assist them stay healthy physically and mentally or immerse yourself in several choices of activities at the sanctuary and the island which are designed to generate additional revenue to sustain the chimpanzee sanctuary including their feeding, caring and housing for the 49 chimps currently residing at the Ngamba chimp sanctuary. Chimps eat over 30,000kgs of fruit and vegetable each year.
If you are a fishing enthusiast, Ngamba Island Chimp sanctuary offers either a half or full day fishing excursion on Lake Victoria with certified fishing guides. During the fishing expedition, you will visit neighbouring Koome Island which is a famous bird sanctuary with over 120 bird species, as well as different rare plants and trees species.
You will then depart for Entebbe.
