Overview.
The 4 days Rwanda gorilla safari will get you a memorable encounter with the Rwanda gorillas in the Virunga Volcanoes National Park, renowned for being the home of the pioneer primatologist Dian Fossey for a few years of her life. You will get to learn first-hand the incredible work that Dian Fossey did with families of mountain gorillas including stories about her favourite gorilla “Digit”. You will visit the setting for the movie “gorillas in the mist”.
Your Rwanda gorilla safari starts in Kigali, takes you to Volcanoes National Park for 2 nights and ends in Kigali, Rwanda’s capital city. Tracking the mountain gorillas through Volcanoes National Park is a very thrilling and once in a lifetime experience. You will be led into the slopes of the Virungas, by experienced ranger guides and trackers whose job it is to locate the overnight movements of the gorillas and will therefore pretty much have an idea of the gorillas’ location on trekking day. Once you locate the gorilla family, you’ll spend an hour with the gorillas, observing and photographing them before returning to the lodge for relaxation and reminiscing about the whole awesome gorilla tracking experience.
Otherwise activities on the safari include visiting Dian Fossey’s grave, tracking the golden monkeys, visiting local villages and the twin lakes of Bulera and Ruhondo.

Day 1: Arrival to Rwanda.
VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK, RWANDA.
Arrival at Kigali airport where you will be welcomed by our airport representative and safari drievr guide. Depending on arrival time, you may have a Kigali city tour before transferring to Virunga Lodge on the foothills of Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park.
The drive from Kigali to Virunga Lodge is a beautiful 2.5hrs drive on good winding roads with great views. Along the way you will pass by Rwandans going on with their daily lives. On arrival to Virunga Lodge you will be briefed about your Rwanda gorilla safari and thereafter have a guided walk to the twin lakes of Bulera and Ruhondo, all the while taking in great views of the majestic Virunga volcanoes and the beautiful verdant Rwanda countryside.
Dinner and overnight at Virunga Lodge.
Day 2: Mountain Gorilla Tracking.
An early start for the gorilla trek. You will have an early breakfast and after you’ll be transferred to the park headquarters for pre-gorilla trek briefing at 7am. You will be assigned into groups of 8 persons each. You will be briefed about gorilla trekking etiquette including keeping a distance of 7 feet from the gorillas, not using flash photography, not feeding the gorillas etc.
You will transfer to the gorilla trekking trailheads from where you will head into the mountain forest led by experienced park ranger guides. On encountering the mountain gorillas, you will spend 1 hour with them observing them feed, play, interact and going on about their daily lives unperturbed by the presence of human beings. Later you’ll descend to the base of the mountains and rejoin with you driver guide for the ride back to the lodge.
Day 3: Explore Lake Kivu.
Today after breakfast, you’ll be driven for 1.5hours from Volcanoes National Park to Gisenyi a lakeside town on the shores of Lake Kivu. The day is spent relaxing on the shores and beaches of Lake Kivu. You may take a boat ride to one of the islands in the lake. Later in the evening you will return to Virunga Lodge.
Day 4: Track the golden monkeys/Trek to Dian Fossey’s Grave.
Today you have the safari option of either tracking the golden monkeys or trekking to Dian Fossey’s Grave and the cemetery of her favourite gorilla “Digit”.
The golden monkeys are a fascinating primate species with thick bronze coats and beautiful blue faces. They are well worth tracking through the Volcanoes Forest.
You will later return to the lodge for lunch before transferring back to Kigali four your departure flight to your next safari destination either to Zanzibar, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda or back home.
