ACTIVITIES AT MOUNT GAHINGA LODGE

GAHINGA BATWA VILLAGE

Batwa Pygmies, Mgahinga National Park Uganda
Batwa Pygmies Uganda

Volcanoes Safaris in May 2018 officially launched a permanent village for the Batwa community. The Gahinga Batwa community is composed of 100 adults and their children. It is the first permanent home of its kind for the Batwa since they were relocated from the Mgahinga National Park 25 years ago. The Batwa are believed to be the oldest surviving indigenous people in the Central Africa region. The Batwa live off hunting, gathering plants and live in caves and huts made out of leaves and branches. When you stay at Mount Gahinga Lodge, you get the opportunity to participate in a Batwa heritage experience. You will visit the local Batwa community in their local traditional set up and learn about how they have managed to survive for generations in the Mgahinga National Park and its environs.

Batwa cultural visit

You will get a chance to watch a Batwa dance group performance when they perform some of their traditional songs and dances. You will also get the opportunity to visit the Batwa vocation school with was set up and is run by the Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust and teaching the Batwa community various vocational courses including weaving, knitting and sewing. All the gods produced at the school by the Batwa are sold and the proceeds from the same go directly to the Batwa artisans.

GORILLA TRACKING

Mgahinga Gorillas Uganda
Mountain Gorillas Mgahinga National Park Uganda

Stay at Mount Gahinga Lodge and track the rare mountain gorillas in Uganda. Gorilla tracking is for most visitors a magical and once in a life time experience. Staring in the eyes of the gentle giant silverbacks of Bwindi is an experience that stays with you for a very long time. Gorilla trackers are allocated to gorilla groups/families in groups of 8 persons and are led into the mountains in search of the gorillas by experienced ranger guides. Once you locate the gorillas, you spend one magical hour with them, watching them play, feed and going about their daily lives. You are permitted to take still photos and videos as memories of your visit. Typically, gorilla treks take anything between 2hrs-8hrs depending on the gorilla group that you are trekking. You later return to Mount Gahinga Lodge to reminisce about your day over a coffee/tea around the fireplace in the main lounge area of the main building.

GOLDEN MONKEY TRACKING

Golden Monkeys tracking Uganda
Golden Monkey tours Mgahinga National Park Uganda

There is only a very small number of surviving golden monkeys in the world. Mgahinga National Park in Uganda and Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda are privileged to be home to some of that small remaining number of golden monkeys. The golden monkeys are a joy to watch when you join a golden monkey tracking tour in Mgahinga National Park. You will be led by an experienced team of range guides into Mgahinga Forest and the treks typically take 2 to 4 hours.

BIRDING

Safari journeys to Rwanda and Uganda are every birder’s dream. Both Rwanda and Uganda are some of the best bird watching destinations in the world with each offering a wide diversity of bird species that can only be found in Rwanda or Uganda. Uganda boasts a population of well over 1000 bird species with 150 bird species endemic to Uganda. Rwanda follows closely in 2nd place with a recorded over 700 bird species and home to the 2nd largest number of endemic Albertine region bird species. Stay at Kyambura Gorge Lodge for a chance to go bird watching in the birding prolific Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park.

CLIMB A VOLCANO.

Guests staying at Virunga Lodge or Gahinga Lodge have easy access to the Virunga chain of volcanoes, which offer challenging hikes and stunning panoramas. The three most popular volcanoes to climb are Mt. Gahinga, Mt. Sabyinyo, and Mt. Muhabura. These hikes are of varying difficulty and typically take a full day. The treks starts at 7:00am from the park headquarters, from where visitors drive to the base of the volcano.
