ACTIVITIES AT VIRUNGA LODGE
Gorilla trekking.
Stay at Virunga Lodge and track the rare mountain gorillas. Gorilla trekking is for most visitors a magical and once in a life time experience. Staring in the eyes of the gentle giant silverbacks of the Virunga is an experience that stays with you for a very long time. Gorilla trekkers are allocated to gorilla groups/families in groups of 8 persons and are led into the mountains in search of the gorillas by experienced ranger guides. Once you locate the gorillas, you spend one magical hour with them, watching them play, feed and going about their daily lives. You are permitted to take still photos and videos as memories of your visit. Typically, gorilla treks take anything between 2hrs-8hrs depending on the gorilla group that you are trekking. You later return to Virunga Lodge to reminisce about your day over a cold drink on your private terrace of the lodge.
Golden Monkey tracking.
Golden monkeys are a rare and endangered primates’ species. A few of the remaining golden monkeys can be found in Volcanoes National Park Rwanda and mountain Mgahinga National Park across the border in Uganda. When you visit Rwanda and stay at Virunga Lodge while on a safari to trek the mountain gorillas, you may also wish to consider tracking the golden monkeys the day before or after your mountain gorilla trek. Golden monkeys are a joy to watch as they go about playing and wiggling their golden bodies and tails. It is an experience well worth undertaking when on a tour to Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park.
Hiking a volcano.
Stay at the beautiful Virunga Lodge and get a chance to hike any of the Virunga Volcanoes. You may choose to hike the Muhabura volcano or the Bisoke volcano over 1 day or the Karisimbi volcano over 2 days. Both are rewarding experiences for adventure safari tour enthusiasts. You may also wish to consider trekking to Dian Fossey’s grave which is nestled between the Bisoke and Karisimbi volcanoes. For most visitors keenly interested in gorilla conservation and the story of how it all started in Rwanda and the personal story of Dian Fossey, the trek to her grave and her favourite gorillas-Digit is a highly worthwhile experience.
Bird watching.
Tours to Rwanda and Uganda are every birder’s dream. Both Rwanda and Uganda are some of the best bird watching destinations in the world with each offering a wide diversity of bird species that can only be found in Rwanda or Uganda. Uganda boasts a population of well over 1000 bird species with 150 bird species endemic to Uganda. Rwanda follows closely in 2nd place with a recorded over 700 bird species and home to the 2nd largest number of endemic Albertine region bird species. Stay at Virunga Lodge for a chance to go bird watching in the birding prolific Volcanoes National Park.
Intore dance.
Visitors staying at Virunga Lodge while on safari to Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, get a chance to watch a performance of local intore dancers a dance troupe supported by Volcanoes Safaris’ Virunga Lodge since 2004. Your stay at Virunga Lodge will greatly contribute toward the social-economic development of the local communities, as well as support of efforts aimed at conservation of the endangered mountain gorillas to keep them alive for future generations to trek as well.
Guided walk to Lakes Bulera & Ruhondo.
On a free afternoon or evening while staying at Virunga Lodge, why not join a guided walk to the beautiful twin lakes of Bulera and Ruhondo. Lake Bulera sits right at the foot of Virunga Lodge. The walk to the lakes will give you a chance to experience local village life and interact with local Rwandese as they go about their daily lives. You may visit a local market and local school.
