Start & Departure Point : Bujumbura International Airport

Day 1 : Arrival in Bujumbura and transfer to the Hotel

On your arrival at Bujumbura airport, you will be met and greeted  by our driver/guide and transferred to a Bujumbura hotel for check-in. After brushing up your jetlag you will have a chance to be taken on a tour of Bujumbura  the vibrant and capital city of Burundi which tour includes :

  • A boat trip to Rusizi National Park to explore closer the hippos and birds in Lake Tanganyika;
  • A visit to Albert’s crocodiles
  • A trip to The Explorers Memorial, a huge rock in the Suburbs of Bujumbura commemorating the meeting between explorers Livingstone & Stanley
  • A visit to Independence Hero Mausoleum;
  • Visit to Unity Monument
  • Checking out of Belvedere Hill which offers a scenic view of Bujumbura City
  • Visit to the Islam Cultural Center

Return to Safari Gate Hotel(3*) for overnight.

Day 2: Kiganda Royal Grounds.

On this day after breakfast, we head out of Bujumbura and drive towards Kibira National Park our first tour attraction out of Bujumbura. On arrival to Kibira, we explore the Teza tea plantations and later visit Kiganda Royal grounds renowned for having been the venue for signing the historical treaty between King Gisabo Mwezi and the German colonial administration. Thereafter we get a chance to visit the grounds that hosted the inauguration pf King Gisabo Mwezi, King Mutaga Mbikije and all the other notable political kings in Burundi’s history. Later in the afternoon the tour proceeds to Gitega for an overnight at Tropitel Hotel Gitega(3*)

Day 3: Gishora drum sanctuary-Gitega National Museum.

Gitega is Burundi’s 2nd biggest city after Bujumbura the capital city. Gitega is situated in central Burundi and used to be the colonial political capital of Burundi. After breakfast, we get a chance to visit the famous Burundi National Museul, the catholic village of Mushasha, the former administration offices during the German colonial times. We also get a chance to visit with the largest coffee processing factory in Burundi. Afterwards this rich Burundi cultural and historical tour will take us to Gishora drum sanctuary on Gishora Hill for a drumming performance and exhibition by a lively cultural group.

Return to Tropitel Hotel Gitega(3*) for overnight.

Day 4: Karera waterfalls.

We are served a sumptuous breakfast at Tropitel Hotel, after which we depart Gitega for Rutana to get chance to see the beautiful waterfalls of Karera, a mesmerizing cascade of waterfalls known locally to possess healing powers. We later proceed with a scenic drive to Makamba to watch a performance by the Agasimbo dance troupe, a special traditional and cultural dance only experienced in Southern Burundi. After the performance by the Agasimbo dancers, the tour proceeds to Nyanza-Lac for overnight at East African Hotel (3*).

Day 5: Muhweza Hot springs – Rumonge Natural Reserve

We have breakfast at East African Hotel and later proceed to visit a local fishing village. We are accorded a chance to see life first hand in a Burundi fishing village and local villagers in action fishing for their livelihoods. We also get a chance to check out the Burton-Speke memorial set up in Nyanza-Lac before we transfer to Rumungo Nature reserve where we do monkey tracking and plenty of bird watching. Later we proceed to Muhweza hot springs and time permitting we also visit a major palm oil producing factory in Burundi.

Overnight at Tanganyika Blue Bay Resort (3*)

Day 6: Source of the River Nile- Community visit.

We continue with our cultural and historical tour of Burundi when we get a chance to visit the source of the Nile at Rutovu. No tour to Burundi is complete without a visit to the source of the mighty Nile famous for being the longest river in Africa. It is believed that it is here that the Nile starts its long journey to the Mediterranean Sea. As we make our way back to Bujumbura we shall have a stop over in the Mugamba area to visit a local family in the village to get a homestay experience in a local Burundi visit to get a chance to witness and learn how locals live in Burundi.  Arrival back to Bujumbura later in the evening.

Day 7: Departure

After breakfast,

We visit Afric, a coffee processing factory in Bujumbura. During the visit you are treated to a from “plantation harvest to cup” coffee experience that teaches one the process through which raw coffee beans are processed into coffee in a cup ready to drink. At the factory you get a chance to sample some coffee drinks and those who prefer to buy some processed coffee for taking with you back home. After the ARFIC visit, we continue to the handcraft’s village “Chez Natalie” to buy some souvenirs to take enable you take some memories of Burundi back home.

After lunch transfer to the airport depending on your flight time.
